Valerie Parm has spent her professional career helping others

Valerie Parm, who helps families who have been victims of natural disasters, is working on her master’s degree in divinity from the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and has performed more than 900 disaster home inspections as a subcontractor with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. She has worked with families in the aftermath of such hurricanes as Katrina, Rita, Ike, Gustave and the Mississippi floods in Iowa.

Parm founded a disaster recovery ministry with Holy Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, New Bethel Baptist Church and Friendship Baptist Church to help Katrina victims trying to rebuild in the gulf area.

The disaster ministry, Humanitarian Outreach for People Everywhere, or project HOPE4NOLA, has worked with needy families of New Orleans and has helped rebuild the homes of  11 families in the Gulf coast region, with the assistance of Catholic Charities and Youth Build of Mahoning Valley.

Parm, who is married and has four children, teaches Bible study and served as a volunteer with Girl Scouts Troop 523, the Youngstown City Schools, ACTION and Working America.
