YNDC Begins to Attract New

Residents to City Neighborhoods.

August 31, 2010The YNDC’s Healthy Homeownership program, which provides homebuyers with homebuyer training and up to $5,000 of downpayment assistance has begun to attract new residents to Youngstown’s Idora and Crandall Park North Neighborhoods. The program, which began operation in March 2010, has attracted several new residents to city neighborhoods.

One of the first participants to complete the program moved to the Idora Neighborhood after living for many years in Long Beach, California. Art Como, originally from Struthers, Ohio, was attracted to the Idora Neighborhood because of the efforts of YNDC and the neighborhood’s proximity to Mill Creek MetroParks. The Healthy Homeownership program provided Como with $5,000 for downpayment assistance toward the purchase of his new home in Idora.

Como noted, “It’s the most wonderful program in the world. Comparatively, you can’t match the bang for your buck you are able to get in Youngstown.”

The Healthy Homeownership program is also attracting new residents to the Crandall Park North Neighborhood on the city’s north side including Michelle Green and David Miscimarra. David is formerly of San Diego, California and is relocating to Youngstown and chose Crandall Park North because of YNDC’s program and the neighborhood’s diverse character.

“YNDC’s Healthy Homeownership program helped make my dream of homeownership a reality. The downpayment assistance and homebuyer training proved invaluable, as I transitioned from renting to homeownership.” said Michelle Green of Crandall Park North.

“The Healthy Homeownership program is quickly gaining momentum as a key strategy of our focused neighborhood development efforts in strategic city neighborhoods. We hope to continue growing the program and our attraction of new residents; ultimately rebuilding the market in Youngstown,” said Presley Gillespie, Executive Director.
